about Alexandra Jacoby
Hi,
I’m Alexandra:
a painter, photographer, writer, events producer, yoga instructor: creating space for conversation
I have many interests. Combining seemingly unrelated fields and ideas.
ABOUT ME IN BUSINESS
Much of my business experience is in Marketing, with over 14 years in B2B.
What I am especially good at is communication and process-building.
I make things clear to everyone involved, set up procedures and tracking, empower people, and hand it off to the next person.
I’m currently finishing up my role as Purchasing & Merchandising Manager at U.S. Balloon Co., and beginning as an Associate Bookkeeper at The Bookkeeping Company. Since mid-2010, I’ve served as Treasurer for the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (and am one of its bloggers at re:Cycling). Occasionally teach yoga at Yoga to the People.
I’m in a transition period (though I expect there will always be a range of projects on my landscape!), building my bookkeeping practice, making changes to my business life inside and out.
ABOUT MY ARTWORK
My primary art project at the moment is a provocative one: It’s a book of vagina portraits for women so we can see ourselves for ourselves. This project emerged from a conversation with a friend about whether we liked the way our vaginas looked. It quickly became clear to me that we had too little knowledge of this important body part and, after asking other women, and finding that our lack of knowledge was typical, I became determined to correct that with vagina vérité®—an unabashed exploration of the plain, ordinary, mysterious matter of vaginas.
I have photographed over 100 vulvas [v-portraits]. The women who participated in the project may or may not be comfortable with their bodies. They range in age, experiences and lifestyle, and relationship with their vaginas, vulvas, bodies. My hope is that any woman who picks up the book will know that she is included, unique and valued. Because she is.
I have completed the photography and written the introduction text to go with them. I’m in the process of adding the text to the site to get feedback. Next up: publishing! (Any ideas you have toward making that happen are welcome!) Meanwhile, an Artist’s Print of the book is available online. You can order it here. It’s a project I have been working on for over ten years. You can learn more about the project, as well as read questionnaire responses and add your own at http://www.vaginaverite.com
MORE ART
Two paint projects I’m incubating are:
- the Gwada watercolor postcard project, which explores ideas about home, travel, vacation, story-telling, repetition and water. [Gwada is Guadeloupe]
- the daily portrait project: trees, which explores repetition more deeply, familiarity, trees as bodies, time, air & seasons [I think]
YOGA
Yoga is a big part of my life—it informs how I work, and learn, and face challenges. If you’re interested in my yoga experiences (yours will be totally different!), start with my yoga bio or click on the yoga category cloud for a list of yoga posts. You may be surprised how much it relates to your life (even if you have no interest in every trying yoga)—and, if you never tried yoga, there’s a good chance you’ll be surprised by it.
THANK YOU for coming by and reading my stuff. I welcome your thoughts, comments, questions!
